PAWMENCAP was started with 8 mentally challenged children under the Manokrushi project. By the year 1995, a vocational rehabilitation center was developed for both adult men and women with the problem of mental retardation. In the year 2003, we launched Mayukha for the early intervention and pre-school children. At present, the strength of PAWMENCAP projects is 285. We have successfully trained and placed the adults with mental retardation in post offices, super markets, and various private establishments.

Recently we started working on the proposal for Gharaunda which is a Short term respite care and Long term residential care for all ages and genders. We have purchased 200 square yards at Asif Nagar, Hyderabad for the construction of day care/Residential home for the mentally handicapped. The day care/ residential center is designed to accommodate about 285 students.

PAWMENCAP has come a long way since the 1988 when it was founded. It has helped various mentally challenged children and adults to seek knowledge, survive independently, and earn a respectable living in the society. It has touched the hearts of many parents and showed them a ray of hope when in complete darkness. It has helped uplift a minor portion of the mentally challenged and hopes to reach out to many more in the coming years.

Out of the 185 students trained at the school in the last two years, 60% of them belong to families that are below the poverty line. This means that we have been able to convince and enroll families that earlier never understood the importance of educating a mentally disabled child. PAWMENCAP is also reputed to be the only center to admit and train children and adults in varying degrees of mental retardation. So while some schools safely admit only the mildly retarded individuals since they are easy to handle, PAWMENCAP accepts & admits every intellectually impaired of all severity levels, all ages, all genders and from all economic walks of life under its fold. All this however, has been possible because PAWMENCAP believes and abides by its vision and mission statements.

PAWMENCAP widely canvas and prompt every provision of the government acts for the equal rights and mainstreaming of the intellectually impaired. We conducted household enumeration to identify families with mentally retarded person in Asif Nagar, Charminar, Golkonda, Khairtabad, Shaikpet,Rajendra Nagar and Nampally mandals primarily concentrating on the BPL and low income groups. Many parents of that group were encouraged to admit their mentally disabled children for proper training and time employment in PAWMENCAP projects.

Success Stories

Meet Aftab

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affects a person’s ability to move, maintain balance and posture. It is the most common motor disability in childhood; it is a lifelong physical disability. Most of the children about 75% – 85% have spastic CP , the muscles are stiff and as a result their movement can be awkward.

Aftab Ahmed had Cerebral Palsy nature since birth. Doctors began prescribing special devices to help him re-establish or maintain a suitable range of motion. These devices were to be worn while doing day-to-day activities including school time activities. After regular physiotherapy at PAWMENCAP, Aftab is now able to balance himself and walk with very little support.

Meet Ashwani

Ashwani is a 28 year old Mild student of our vocational center. She lost her father at a young age and she was brought up by her mother. She had many behavior problems and was constantly in need of behavior modification.

After being trained rigorously at PAWMENCAP for 4 years in kitchen work she learned to cut vegetables, make simple meals, clean kitchen, and wash vessels. She is now perfect in various occupational and domestic skills thus becoming self-reliant.
